There are many places where to stay in Malta, but visitor tend to favour certain localities. This is due to a combination of factors, such as the abundance of hotels and the attractions and amenities in the area.

Most people stay in Sliema, St. Julian’s, St. Paul’s Bay and Valletta. The sister island of Gozo, Mellieha, the 3 Cities, Mdina and Rabat also receive many visitors, but are comparatively less popular. Regardless, each locality possesses its own distinctive charm and offers unique experiences for visitors.

I’m going to give you an overview of 9 places where to stay in Malta for your comparison. First off, I’m going to start with Sliema and St. Julian’s. There is a comparison of Sliema, St. Julian’s and Valletta in this comprehensive guide. However I’m going to briefly go over the main points in this article.

1. Sliema

Personality

1. Central location: Sliema is a convenient base for exploring the island with easy access to popular attractions. Like for example Valletta and the Three Cities, which you can reach by bus or a short ferry ride. There is also a comprehensive network of direct bus routes, connecting it to many popular places of interest across Malta. The bus stops with the most direct bus routes to various attractions are the ones on either side of the Chalet and the one in front of M&S.
2. Stunning coastal views: Sliema is renowned for its picturesque waterfront promenade, offering breathtaking views of the Mediterranean Sea. You can enjoy scenic walks here and relax by the seaside.
3. Shopping and dining: Sliema has a wide range of shops, boutiques, and small shopping malls. You can indulge in some retail therapy and find a variety of international brands. Plus, the area has a diverse dining scene, with many restaurants, cafes, and bars with various cuisines to choose from. Sliema is one of the places where I personally enjoy dining. The food quality in Sliema is generally good, and the service is also satisfactory.

There are also various boat trips and cruises available, the most popular is a boat trip to the Island of Comino to swim at the Blue Lagoon.
5. Family-friendly: Sliema has a welcoming atmosphere for children. There are three fantastic playgrounds located at Exiles located here, Tigne located here, and Independence Gardens located here.

3. Limited sandy beaches: Sliema’s coastline mainly consists of rocky shores and seafront promenades, rather than sandy beaches. Although there are some artificial beach clubs and lidos. Most people swim at Exiles next to Exiles Beach Club located here. However some people also swim at Qui-Si-Sana Beach, the area just below Surfside located here, and the teeny-tiny beach at Balluta Bay located here. 4. Nightlife noise: Sliema is known for its vibrant scene, along part of the promenade and select areas. However, for a quieter and more tranquil stay, you should pick locations that are a little further inwards from the promenade.
5. Limited parking spaces: As a local, I struggle with the limited parking situation in Sliema. The problem becomes more challenging during the summer months. Most especially in the evenings when people flock to Sliema for leisure activities along the promenade. In the past my friends and I often spent around 30 minutes circling the area in search of a parking spot. Therefore, anyone planning to rent a car should know about this car park for Welbees, the one at The Point and one at the AX Victoria Hotel. I highly recommend for tourists who plan to rent a car to book a hotel with a car park to avoid the parking hassle.

Suggested Places to Stay in Sliema

• Plaza Regency Hotel offers budget-friendly accommodation that’s great for families. It is located very close to Balluta Bay, within 250 meters of the children’s playground near Exiles and 20 minutes walk from the 2 main bus stops. It has comfortable family rooms and also 3 swimming pools, one of which is an outdoor shallow kids pool. However the draw back with this hotel is that it does not have a car park.
• Mr Todd Hotel – is a lovely hotel that is also fairly budget friendly. It doesn’t have a pool, but it has family rooms and a private parking area. It’s also in a fantastic location in the main part of Sliema, just 150 meters from the Sliema ferry and bus stop in front of M&S. Further down the road you will find may cafes and restaurants where to get a bite to eat.
• AX The Palace is a luxury and pricy 5 star hotel that is also great for families. It has 2 swimming pools, one indoor and one outdoor and many other amenities. It has its own car park and is in an excellent location in a road that is not overly busy. It is within 10 minutes walk of: the Tigne kids playground, Independence Gardens, the Exiles playground, The Chalet bus stop and the M&S bus stop and Sliema ferry.

2. St. Julian’s

Personality

St. Julian’s is known as the entertainment hub of the island especially towards the Paceville area. It offers a bustling nightlife scene with numerous bars, clubs, and casinos that attracts a young and energetic crowd.

However this is one of the worst beaches in Malta for theft, so only take what you need. Alternatively you can consider buying one of the many waterproof mobile pouches from Amazon to take your valuables with you when swimming.

• The Dolmen Hotel in St. Paul’s Bay has six swimming pools, a spa, and a fitness centre. You can enjoy various activities here, such as water sports facilities and evening entertainment, including live performances. While it is slightly more expensive compared to other accommodations in St. Paul’s Bay, the hotel provides the convenience of onsite parking.
• db San Antonio Hotel and Spa is one of the more expensive stays in St. Paul’s Bay. It is a hotel that is well loved among locals and popular with tourists. It offers family rooms and great amenities including 4 swimming pools, a fitness centre, a spa and onsite parking.

2. Walkable: You can explore all the main places of interest of Mdina and Rabat on foot at a leisurely pace. The fortified city of Mdina is around 250 meters by 200 meters and incredibly tiny. St. Paul’s Catacombs in Rabat will only take just over 10 minutes to walk there from Mdina.

• Radisson Blu Resort & Spa is pricey, but it is one of the few buildings next to Golden Bay. It is great for families having family rooms, a kids club, games room and kids play ground. Plus it offers a long list of activities on-site and off-site. It also has 3 swimming pools, a fitness centre and spa.
• db Seabank Resort and Spa is a pricey hotel, but it is all inclusive and conveniently located right in front of Ghadira Bay. The hotel has family rooms, a kids play ground, a kids club and huge list of other activities. It also has 2 swimming pools, a fitness centre and free parking in the car park inside the hotel. This will come in handy especially if you hire a car, because street parking is limited during summer months.

The 3 cities refers to Cospicua, Birgu (aka Vittoriosa) and Senglea (aka L-Isla). They have a distinct and historic personality thanks to The Knights of Malta who built the towns. The knights were sailors and left behind a rich maritime heritage in these towns.

It is well rated and praised for its friendly staff. They also have an outdoor swimming pool and a very good breakfast to make sure you start your day on the right foot.
• Dun Gorg Guest House is located within 1 minute walk of the restaurants and market. It is beautifully decorated and modern with family rooms. It doesn’t have many facilities and amenities, but it does offer a comfortable stay and a nice breakfast selection.

• Viewpoint Boutique Living is perfect to be surrounded by Gozo’s wild natural beauty. You will see the stunning cliffs of the valley which lead down to Xlendi Bay which is also pretty. There are a good selection of restaurants here and also a little beach, unless you decide to swim in the hotel pool. This place is pricey, but the view is hard to beat. Plus it has family rooms.
• Kempinski Hotel is well known among the locals as a brilliant luxury stay. It is in San Lawrenz which is a very quiet village in Gozo surrounded by beautiful countryside. They have double bedrooms and family rooms, an indoor kids play area and babysitting and child minding services. There are 5 swimming pools one of which is a kids pool, a fitness centre, and spa and wellness centre.
